On Monday at 7am we headed out for Deadwood, via Wyoming and the Devils Tower. Along the way we saw hundreds of oil wells, fracking rigs for natural gas, coal mines, and 30 to 40 coal trails. We also saw a huge heard of buffalo,this picture shows probably less than 5% of the heard.
We then arrived at the Devils Tower, which is really incredible. As you drive toward the Tower, it begins to loom up in the distance, incredible! It rises up more than 800 feet from it’s base. It is part of an old magma core to a volcano, where all the softer material has warn away creating column like striations. We walked the 1.3 mile trail around the tower, where we saw seven different climbers climbing up or down the tower.
After leaving the Tower we drove on to Deadwood. We are staying in the Deadwood Mountain Grand hotel/casino, a converted slime plant that in days of yore removed gold particles from pulverized ore until 1973. We walked around town and had a very nice meal at the Deadwood Social Club, above the Saloon #10. The original Saloon #10 was where where Wild Bill Hickock was shot in the back, while holding what has come to be known as the deadmans hand. Casinos are everywhere in Deadwood as the town attempts to attract tourists with deep pockets and resurrect itself. It was pretty quiet on a Monday evening.
